I have loved animals as long as I can remember. I have always wanted to go to college for Wildlife Biology specializing in BIG cats. My original plan was to join the ROTC, get four years of schooling in, than join Peace Corps for the Master Degree program, an than use my 4 years of paid college from ROTC to get my Doctorate. I wanted to Double Major in Wildlife Biology and Environmental Science. I have decided that for now I just want to be able to work with big cats whether at the zoo or elsewhere. I still plan to continue my education, but what is the absolute minimum education I must have to be able to work with these magnificent animals and get a little experience of what I may be getting into?
if you want to work with big cats in a zoo or sanctuary setting then you will need to get a degree in zoology, biology, animal science, or wildlife biology. any of these majors will be fine for working at a zoo, which one you go for really depends on what is offered at the college you go to. i live in minnesota and am a zoology grad, there was only one college here that offered that program; the other schools here had only biology or animal science. while you are in school start looking for internships at zoos, since you want to work with big cats look for carnivore internships. a good place to look is the AZA website under internships, check often as they add more all the time. to get a zoo job when you graduate, especially since you want to work big cats you will need all the experience you can get and internships are the best way to get that experience. most internships are no paid but it is still a great experience. i had a internship at the minnesota zoo and it was one of the best summers i have ever had!!
