Name: Pumpkin (aka Stuart) About: I have always enjoyed painting. As a child I designed pantomime sets on the back of cardboard cereal boxes. Whilst an undergraduate at Cambridge I preferred attending the Fine Art lectures instead of Medieval English Literature. I am, to a large extent, self taught - although I have attended numerous courses and life classes. The shop which framed my pictures for local exhibitions wished to sell them in their gallery. Six more galleries followed. Ill health forced an early retirement and allowed me the luxury of having more time for painting. Fave Artists: My favourite artists are the watercolour impressionists - Yardley, Howard, Wesson. Some have compared my larger paintings to Piper and Yardley. My greatest joy is the challenge provided by watercolour. Charcoal and chalk is, additionally, a special treat as I can get really messy. Thoughts: I believe that good art should appear effortless in construction - as though it has simply 'dropped onto the paper'. To this end I always paint to music. Bach, Katie Melua, and Eric Clapton all have their place. I always carry a sketchbook - it is better than any camera in capturing the moment. I also keep a journal diary - this can be painfully revealing and often great fun. Finally I have a 'messing about' book for experimenting and 'letting go'. Inevitably this contains the best art! I am excited by new directions in art - the internet has transformed the opportunity to show and study fresh work, to learn the latest techniques, and - most importantly - to make new friends.
