Origins of the forms of art were found in ancient caves that date back thousands of years, in mankind's infancy. And pictography was the very first way of communicating amongst early humans. As far as we know, it was the only method to communicate prior to the spoken and written languages had been developed. Pictography was a major strategy of communication. Pictures of animals or hunters on the caves' walls has been dated to be much more than twenty thousand years old and is ancient proof that pictography has been a simple form of communication.
Fine Art has been determined by being not just historic, aesthetically valuable, and lovely and also the most tangible amongst all other art forms. You will find numerous historical paintings and sculptures that date back lots of centuries and are becoming studied, exhibited and treasured in great museums of Fine Art around the world. This makes Fine Art the most superior over the performing arts of music, singing, dancing and above the art of cinematography. Art of entertainment is booming! Hollywood stars, singers and dancers are finding all of the recognitions and having lavish lives, starting in the course of their young years. Having said that many talented and innovative visual artists get recognized when they're pretty old or have passed on. This old dilemma needs to be and could be changed. Art is far more than just a basic expression but rather it can be thought frozen in colorful handworked magic just like the Huge Canvas Art you can see on this page.

How should I price my art?
I'm getting commissioned to do two paintings for a culinary teacher. I'm doing one really difficult painting which will probably take...50 hours? yeah. and the other one should be like 5
but they're both huge. 3 foot by four foot and 4 by 5.
I'm just not sure how much to charge.
Btw. The canvases are 50$ a pop. should I include that?
$50 per canvas First of all...you're paying too much for your canvas.
I pay $11 CDN at Gwartzman's in Toronto for 30"x30" canvas primed and stretched.
Do not charge by the hour.
Charge by the piece.
Sounds like you have a huge amount of work ahead of you. many hours.
BUT...I say not to charge by the hour because, as your skills improve, so will the speed of your painting and QUALITY of your painting improve.
So charge by the job.
The 3'x4'///well size is a factor --but how skilled are you?
If this is one of your first commissions...and I think it is since you do not know how much to charge, start kind high ($300 for smaller once since you are novice painter)and let her talk you down if she dares to barter.
Larger ask for $500.
She might TRY to talk you way down.
It's up to you if you want to let her.
Don't over price or you won't get the job.
It's only 2 of probably many many painting you will do in your career as a painter.
main thing is to get the job...and get paid fairly at the same time. Better to get ten commissions every few months as not too high price than to be over-prideful and get one a year.
If she likes your art, she will recommend you.
you need to establish a reputation and earn your price through experience.
Also consider HER financial status. Is she LOADED? if so, crank up the price. If not,,consider this.
be open to negotiation and have a sliding scale.
don't broadcast your prices on paper...when you advertise.
have a basic OUTLINE ready to speak of when people make inquiries...but always consider who you are speaking to re: their available income, and the labor entailed before committing to a price. Look at reference photo they want you to paint first and calculate amount of work + materials before making a price for THAT person.
Look online at art people do and charge what you feel your art is worth. Worst that can happen is you get talked down in price. You can say "yes or no". YOU decide.
But don't price too low because you cannot barter UP.
Make 2 copies of signed contract with specifications of job you are to do...and get 50% upfront. deposit.
Here's an example for you.
If I were to sell this double portrait watercolor I did, I'd charge $550 CDN.
It is 10"x12"...size is irrelevant. It's the work entailed.
I've charged less for larger, less complex works in my earlier years as a painter...so price accordingly.
many factors to consider:
Size yes, hours, yes..keep in mind your labor, complexity of the piece, difficulty...(ie: is reference pic black and white and you're expected to colorize it, or rearrange details etc...juxtapose multiple images etc...)
Why am I writing this message to the world? I'm performing my component to be heard and observed as a fellow artist and visual creator who's still around and not that old, and would like to create a positive change in a stale existence of the art world. There ought to be no much more innovative starving artists. True talented visual artists really should not strive and struggle in poverty all their lives. We artists must be recognized and well rewarded during our lives, within the very same way as movie stars; performers or even ball players get their recognitions and rewards. Art dealers should no a lot more sell original art pieces from artists that are no longer here to benefit from the sales. No extra art dealers selling past artists original works for enormous quantity of dollars.
Art dealers shouldn't have any perfect to resell and capitalize on the function they didn't generate and live their lives in luxury by those sales. This is the worst form of stealing from an artist who is long gone. There are various examples of this; one of them is now a well-known artist: Vincent Van Gogh, every painting is selling for sixty million dollars. What a shame. When 1 reads Van Gogh's biography of his difficult poverty stricken life that he lived, usually eating his paints to be able to survive along with the suicidal ending makes one cry. Vincent Van Gogh does not want us to sob, he wants us to prevail and make sure that no a lot more of his unfortunate life saga repeats ever again. And lots of other artists want us to alter the unfair life pattern of a talented innovative fine artist. My individual wish is that, when I am gone none of my original art pieces are ever to be sold. This will be my part in changes to the fine art world for better. Art is much more than just a straightforward expression but rather it's thought frozen in colorful handworked magic just like the Huge Canvas Art you'll see on this page.
