My brother, a heavy equipment operator, recommended that I switch to 10W-30 synthetic oil. The owner's manual recommends 5W-20.
He also recommended a product called zMax to help protect the engine from further damage. It sounds good at their web site, but other sites state it's not any good and may even damage the engine. I'm hesitant to use it.
Still trying to salvage my beautiful truck!
I know nothing can repair the damage, I just need to keep it running until I can save for a new engine.

Unfortunately the damage has already been done, metal has worn away and can't be replaced with any additive. 10w-30 will be fine and might not blow by the piston rings as much because of it's higher viscosity. Zmax won't hurt anything but it won't likely help anything either. It's a placebo and just like other placebos, some people swear by them.
If the truck ran for any amount of time when it was that low on oil, as in, the first indication that you were low on oil was smoke or a funny noise, the engine is in VERY bad shape and can't be fixed without several thousand dollars spent on a rebuild.
If the truck still looks good it might be a good candidate for a trade in. Some dealers are either too desperate to sell a car or too stupid to notice a poorly running engine and won't hit you for the $4,000 deduction that a new engine should be.
